Can we all agree that 2017 was insane? For me, in both good and bad ways. It was such a busy year between graduating university with a degree in advertising and public relations, finally getting married to my boyfriend of over six years, having our first baby, watching my dad kick cancer’s butt, and losing my sweet grandpa to Alzheimer’s.
With all of that going on, I had no choice but to move blogging to the back burner last year.
Which really bummed me out because I’ve fallen in love with creating content on my little corner of the Internet here since I started Katelyn Blogs a couple of years ago.
My hope is that 2018 will be a little less eventful and that I will be able to find a balance between being a wife, a stay-at-home mama, and a blogger.
My goal is to get back to the reason of why I started blogging in the first place: for me. This blog was created to be a fun hobby and a creative outlet for myself.
And the best part?
I’ve found a little tribe of people who enjoy my content and cheer me on through the computer screen. Seriously, the friendships I’ve formed since I’ve started this blog are the best part about it.
Before I took my hiatus, blogging even started to become a little part-time job for me. Which was great, because running a blog takes money and everything I made I put right back into it.
With that being said, I want to share my blogging goals for the new year.
I know a lot of my readers are bloggers themselves and I thought that by putting my goals out there we could cheer each other on and encourage each other to reach our goals.
(P.S. Check out my new planner for 2018. Chip and Joanna got me again! Can we just acknowledge how cute everything is from their line at Target?? I want it all.)
In 2018, I will:
BLOG ONLY WHEN I FEEL INSPIRED
Over the years, I’ve learned that if I’m forcing myself to create content, it’s probably not my best work. My best work is only possible when I’m feeling excited and motivated to create and write.
With all the stress of 2017 behind me, I’m genuinely excited about blogging again. I only want to share my best work. In 2018, it’s always quality over quantity…in every aspect of life.
BECOME A BETTER PHOTOGRAPHER
Since I bought my first real camera (a Nikon D5200 if you’re curious), it has mostly been trial and error trying to figure it out. Phrases and words like f-stops, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO were like a foreign language to me.
Lately, I’ve been finding my groove and have been more and more happy with the quality of pictures I’ve been taking. There’s a ton of room for improvement, though, so I’m going to keep taking classes, researching, and playing with my camera.
STOP USING STOCK PHOTOS
Speaking of photography, this year I’m only going to use my photos. I’m fully transparent and will admit that I have occasionally used stock photos here and there when needed for blog posts, Instagram pictures, etc.
I’ve only used photos that I’ve purchased and had the full rights to. There’s nothing wrong with using stock photos, but this year I want people to get to know me for my work only.
FIND MY STYLE
My blogging style has evolved over time. I’d like to keep tweaking and refining it until I’ve found something that is undeniably me. Again, this has mostly been a trial and error process. I’m constantly playing around with logo designs in Illustrator, testing out different Instagram “themes,” and comparing different fonts, etc.
In blogging, it is so so easy to compare ourselves to what everyone else is doing. This year, I’m focusing on me and staying in my lane. I’ll write and post about what makes me happy.
CREATE MORE VIDEO CONTENT
In college, I took several video creation classes and learned how to use video editing software. I’ve messed around and made several small videos since starting this blog, but I’d really like to focus on implementing more video content in addition to my written posts this year.
STOP PLAYING THE NUMBERS GAME
“How many followers do I have on Instagram?” “How much traffic am I getting to my blog this month?” Playing the numbers game is so exhausting. (Especially with the current Instagram algorithm…anyone else want to petition to bring back chronological order?)
Focusing on numbers is toxic. There are so many bloggers and influencers using bots to grow their following, buying followers, or using the super annoying follow/unfollow method. All of these can be a real deterrent to those of us that have grown our following organically over time.
This year, I’m not going to focus on the numbers. I think as long as I’m creating content that I’m proud of, everything else will take care of itself.
