5 Reasons You Should Start a Blog {& How to Get Started Today} – Blogmas Day 21

When I decided to start my blog last January, I had no idea what I was doing. I decided to give it a try after I had been encouraged by some professors at my university who had talked about the benefits of starting a blog from a career perspective, and since I loved reading other people’s blogs, I thought why not?

And now, almost a year late, after having found something that I’m completely passionate about, building an amazing blogging community, and having learned SO much, I am really glad that I did.

Today, for Blogmas Day 21 I wanted to share with you one of my favorite posts from the archive. Five reasons why YOU should start a blog and how to take that first step. I’ve also talked to some of my blogging gals and got their thoughts on how blogging has been great for them and their advice on starting.

1. You need a creative outlet.

Having your own space on the internet to create posts, showcase your work, and just be 100% yourself is pretty dang awesome.

Blogging allows for a creative outlet that is not allowed in our society. It is the one true place you can do what you want without influence from others. –Ashlee, ashleeliz.com

2. Two words: BLOG TRIBE.

Blogging has allowed me to connect with so many amazing people that have become my “online friends” AND real friends. I got to meet a fellow Oklahoma blogger, Emma Giddens from emmagiddens.com, and she is so down to earth and sweet! Having a blogging community encourages you to grow, and is awesome for bouncing ideas off of and learning from.

I’ve gained so much confidence from writing and experimenting with blogging! Blogger communities are all so accepting too, so you have an amazing support system to help you grow. My advice would be, don’t be afraid of embracing yourself & your style-even if it’s different. Your differences are what attract people to your blog! –Emma, emmagiddens.com

I was finally able to turn my love of fashion into a hobby and as a result, I’ve connected with some really wonderful and like-minded people. –Lauren, rosesandrainboots.com

3. Blogging allows you to become a “Jack of all trades.” And no, that’s not a bad thing.

You don’t have to pick one thing and stick to it. You can be a master of MANY things. It’s so important to have a well-rounded skill set, especially in this ever-changing job market. Starting my own blog has allowed me to refine my existing skills and learn a lot of new ones.

love writing, but I’ve also learned a lot about editing, photography, SEO & analytics, graphic design, planning, and not to mention the marketing that goes into promoting your blog posts! As an advertising & public relations major at my university, the skills I’ve learned through blogging will make me stand out among the crowd when graduation comes around and I’m looking for a job. –Katelyn, katelynblogs.com

4. You’re passionate about something.

When you’re working on something you’re passionate about, you’re happy. You have a story to tell, something to teach, or a perspective to offer through your blog.

I would say that something great that has come out of my blogging experience so far is the wonderful community and friends that I have made and the confidence that it has given me. Blogging can be difficult to learn, understand, and make your way into sometimes, but having blogging friends that understand and support you makes it a lot easier. Not everyone realizes how much work goes into creating a successful blog, so having a support group keeps you from getting discouraged. It has also given me more confidence in myself to see what I have created and how much I can do. It gives me something to be proud of, and a place to relax to do what makes me happy. –Christina, christinaschiccorner.com

5. It’s fun!

What I love about blogging the most aside from being able to share my passion with my followers, is the friendships I have created. The blogging world has such a great ambiance. It is so welcoming. The advice I would give to someone who wants to start blogging is, don’t think twice, just do it. I have received so much help since I started this February. You won’t regret it. –Eva, simplyevahxo.com

Since I started blogging my confidence level within myself has increased drastically. I was slightly terrified when I first began my blog, however now I feel comfortable sharing my thoughts with the world! My advice for anyone who is looking to begin a blog is to make sure that you are blogging about something you are truly passionate about. Blogging requires a lot of time and energy, so make sure that all of your time spent blogging is time well spent! –Alessia, hauteandhoundstooth.com

Just start. Decide what you want to write about and choose a platform. There are tons of free options out there if you’re not ready to commit and buy a domain. And like you’ve heard above, the blogging community is really accepting!

My advice for girls who want to start a blog is that you should go for it, but make sure you properly prepare yourself beforehand. I started my blog randomly one night and had probably only seen one or two blogs before that. I had no idea what I was doing or how much effort it was going to take. Blogging includes a lot of coding to format your blog’s appearance, you need to be consistent to keep a loyal following, and make sure you choose to write about something you’re passionate about. Patience is a virtue in blogging, so don’t be discouraged if things don’t pick up as quickly as you might have hoped. Just stay positive and consistent. –Christina, christinaschiccorner.com
