Taking a month off from blogging and posting to Instagram and Facebook every day has given me a lot of time to reflect on my goals and where I want this blog to head. It has honestly been so relaxing to focus solely on my resolutions for 2017 and to have time to challenge myself in certain areas that need improving.
I took a long time to think about my goals for the new year this time around and let me tell you, it has made all the difference. I want to share these goals with you and give you a little update on where this blog is heading because I am all about accountability and authenticity.

Compliment others more
This has already benefited my life so much, and I think it ties perfectly into the goal below of being grateful. How many times do we think something good about another person but keep it to ourselves? I know I do it ALL. THE. TIME. It can be as simple as “Hey, girl, I love your bag!” Or just thanking someone for the impact they have on my life. If you think something good, say it. Positivity comes back around, just remember to keep it genuine.
It can be hard to find something you’re thankful for when your alarm goes off at 6 AM and you’re forcing yourself to get out of your nice, comfy bed, but thinking about at least one thing you’re grateful for before you get up for the day makes the biggest difference in your mood that morning. My goal has been to think of at least one thing I’m thankful for each day before my feet hit the floor.
Focus on my mental health
This is probably going to be the hardest one for me yet. I’ve never talked publicly about this, but I’ve been struggling silently with anxiety for years. I’m finally feeling like I’m in a good enough place that I can tackle it head-on in a natural and healthy way. I have been reading up on lots of coping mechanisms such as breathing techniques. These tools are a lifesaver when I feel an anxiety attack coming on. During my research, I also found that a lot of anxiety sufferers have benefitted from eating a whole food, plant-based diet that eliminates certain foods known to cause anxiety such as fast food and dairy. I just ordered the book The Anti-Anxiety Food Solution by Trudy Scott, and I can’t wait to read it. If you’re interested, let me know, and I’ll definitely do a review on the book here!
Eat a plant-based diet
I’ve been on a plant-based diet for nearly three weeks now, and I’ve dropped nearly fifteen pounds already (I know!) and have so much more energy. Overall, I’m feeling so much better, especially in the mental health department. This isn’t a diet for me, this is a lifestyle change that I’ve just begun. I’m not sure if this will transition into becoming a full-on vegan, but for now, I’m not eating meat or dairy.
Go green + chemical-free in my beauty routine and life
I’ve been shifting towards a more natural lifestyle for a while now, but my entire mindset changed when I downloaded the Think Dirty app and started seeing how many terrible chemicals were in the makeup and products that I put on my skin every single day! (Please note, this post is not sponsored.) Did you know that over 60% of the products we put on our skin daily is absorbed into the blood stream?? I know I shouldn’t have been surprised as I knew that skin is the bodies largest organ, but DANG. That’s not okay!
“There are hormone disruptor chemicals in many products that have been possibly linked to breast cancer. I was shocked the cosmetics industry was not regulated like the food and drug sectors. And like most women, my lip glosss and shampoo are products I would never think to describe as “toxic” or could contain cancer-causing chemicals.” Lily Tse, from Think Dirty
The Think Dirty app allows you to scan the products you use, and it gives them a score from 0-10. Zero being the most natural and ten being the absolute worst with potentially harmful chemicals. I downloaded this app and scanned EVERYTHING in my home, from the makeup I wear daily to the things in my shower and even my cleaning products. I was shocked when the majority of these products came back with a super high number.
So, what did I do? I made a pile of everything in my apartment that was bad for me and I threw away the really bad and gave the “okay” items to my mom and sister-in-law. I’m starting completely from scratch now and am only purchasing beauty and home products that are made with clean and natural ingredients. Luckily, my fiancè is on board 100% and is letting me ditch the harmful air fresheners and cleaning products in our apartment so I can swap them out with safe alternatives.
What does this mean for the future of Katelyn Blogs?
My niche is changing! From here on out, I will be blogging about all things green beauty and lifestyle, mental health, and plant-based diet related as I transition into a more sustainable and conscious lifestyle.
I am in a state of change right now, and so is this blog. Your support makes this all worth it!
With that being said, I’d love to hear from you! Do you have any questions about living a green life or about making the swap to natural beauty products? I’d love to write about things that you’re interested in!
