I’ve been on a mission to simplify all aspects of my life. I’ve downsized my wardrobe to include only pieces I truly love and wear regularly and have gotten rid of excess clutter thanks to reading The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Mari Kondo. But one thing I didn’t even think of in the journey to creating a more simplified and mindful lifestyle was my beauty routine. Sure, I got rid of all of the makeup I didn’t use regularly when I decluttered but that still left me with a ton of products that took up precious space in my bathroom drawers and countertops.
Disclaimer: This blog post is in collaboration with Maskcara Artist, Dana Dawson, I was gifted the products mentioned below in exchange for an honest review. I do not sell Maskcara products and will not make commission from any purchases made through her site. All opinions are my own.
Would you believe I can do my entire face excluding lashes and brows with these five little tins stuck into this refillable, magnetic palette? The highlight, contour, lip + cheek color, and illuminator takes the place of my previous makeup routine that consisted of countless products.
My makeup routine is now simple and quick. The fact that it all fits perfectly into one compact that I can throw into my bag to take with me is a huge bonus, especially as I’ll soon be on the go toting around a little one when October rolls around!
I’ll admit that I was a little skeptical to try these products at first because I have combination skin which results in a very oily forehead and nose and dry cheeks. The creamy consistency of the makeup had me a little nervous that I’d turn into a shiny grease ball by the end of the day, but I was really pleased that the makeup held up surprisingly well, even in the summer heat! In the past, I’ve typically gone for foundations that have a matte finish to try to combat the oil, but I have to admit that I loved the dewy finish I was left with.
Let’s get into the products!
The highlight is a creamy foundation used to brighten and highlight the areas that need it, like under your eyes.
Where to apply: bridge of the nose, beneath your eyes and down the side of the nose in a pie piece shape, between your brows, on the chin and along the jawline.
I use the HAC brush pictured to achieve a more sculpted look to my face and give definition to my bones.
Where to apply: edges of your face, down the neck, the side of your nose and beneath your cheekbones.
The black cherry color I went with looks dark in the pan but applies as a beautiful warm watermelon color to skin and lips.
Where to apply: apples of your cheeks and to the center of your lips.
Honestly, illuminator is what takes the makeup look to another level. Rose gold is absolutely gorgeous on any skin tone. Even my husband complimented the glowy look it gave me!
Where to apply: cheekbones, the bow of your lip and beneath the arch of your brow.
All of the palettes are completely customizable. You can choose each product in the exact shade that you need, based on your skin tone.
I was so thankful for my Maskcara artist, Dana, because she was able to color match my skin tone as well as let me play around with the other shades of makeup.
